Walter Koenig, the actor who brought Ensign Pavel Chekov to life on the original Star Trek television series, died Sunday at the age of 90. His agent confirmed the news to ABC News on Monday, noting that Koenig passed away of old age at his home in North Hollywood, California. He was surrounded by his daughter and niece when he died.

George Takei, who worked with Koenig on the original series, shared the news in an online post on Monday. Takei described Koenig as more than just the character he played. "Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend," Takei wrote. He added a message for the fans who supported the actor for decades: "To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too."

Koenig’s career took a major turn in 1967 when he joined the cast of Star Trek in its second season. The role of Chekov had not existed when the show first aired; the character was added later. In a 2013 interview with the Television Academy, Koenig explained that the producers were looking for someone who would appeal to children aged eight to 14. He noted that he received mail from young fans commenting on how "groovy" his hair was after he was cast.

Koenig said the role changed the trajectory of his life. In a 1984 interview with Good Morning America, he described Star Trek as having a "monumental effect" on him. He suggested that without the show, he might not have continued acting. "Star Trek has made it possible not only to remain an actor, but to pursue other industry endeavors like writing and directing and producing," he said.

After the original series ended, Koenig returned to the franchise for the film adaptations. He played Chekov in Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. He reprised the role in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock in 1984, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home in 1986, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 1989, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991, and Star Trek: Generations in 1994. He also appeared in other television series such as Columbo and The Starlost.

Beyond acting, Koenig was active in humanitarian causes, focusing on human rights and refugee assistance. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. In recent years, he continued to lend his voice to animated series and appeared at fan conventions. He was also known for his collection of Star Trek memorabilia, which he kept in his home.

Koenig was born on Sept. 14, 1936. He married actress Judy Levitt in 1965; she died in 2022. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle Koenig, who is an actress, comedian, and screenwriter. His son, actor Andrew Koenig, died by suicide in 2010.
